Today we look at a tool that can be used to record lectures, but also to generate rich media for sharing via Weblearn
Creating simple video using Techsmith Relay
At every desk and in every classroom, lecturers have at their disposal the tools to create lively and engaging videos. Techsmith Relay, available across the network, is software which records the computer display and submits the resulting video to MEDIAL – the London Met media server. Typically, the tool is used to capture lectures, but it used to produce simple videos combining anything displayed on your computer screen with a spoken commentary recorded via the PC’s microphone. If you have a webcam on your desktop computer, you can also create ‘Talking head’ videos.
Recordings can be paused at any point during the recording (using an assigned hotkey) whilst you change the display or compose your thoughts. Prior to uploading, recordings can be previewed then trimmed to start and end at appropriate points.
Once you’ve created your video, Techsmith Relay will automatically transfer your recording to MEDIAL. The recording can subsequently be published into Weblearn using the MEDIAL mash-up tool.
The software is excellent for converting slideshows into narrated motion graphics. . Whereas PowerPoint files must be downloaded and opened on a desktop computer with Microsoft Office installed, videos are native to the web, and display within the Weblearn content. See this video for more information.
By integrating a few simple transitions into a Powerpoint file, you can present complex ideas as dynamic and compelling animations that can be viewed on smartphones and tablets, as well as desktop PCs.
