BANG! Being the Building. Musarc Salon at the Barbican
Thursday 26 January 2012, 7:00pm, Barbican Art Gallery. Free admission
Musarc have been invited to host a salon as part of the Barbican’s OMA/Progress exhibition on Thursday 26 January 2011. On the occasion of the event, Musarc have commissioned a new film by sound artist Davide Tidoni which explores sonic impulse responses inside and around the Barbican by popping a balloon.
I went along with Carla Marcheson, Architecture Librarian at Prince’s Foundation for Building Community. We really enjoyed Joseph and Davide’s comic improvisation on how to try and pop a balloon in The Barbican estate and the perils of small acts of creativity in the public domain.
Davide’s video entertained us with various balloon popping experiments and his amazing W. Heath Robinson styled hard hat cum microphone.
Sounds, music, listening, silence, space and power all became alive in the questions and discussion that followed.
Then the sublime music of the choir wafted through the Barbican Art Gallery and seemed to thaw concrete. Acoustic height and grounded singing melded the public space into an intimate and joyful sound space
Carla chatted in Italian to Davide and I bought a commemorative copy of “Being the Building: a selection from the Musarc Bibliography Project” oh joy – what a librarian I am!
