Some of the more seasoned academics at The CASS will remember the teaching era where 35mm slides were used in lectures.  Commercial Road Library still has a slide collection comprising over 90,000 art and design images.

Proposals are invited from students and/or academics to devise an exhibition in the library gallery space based on a creative response to the the slide collection. Potential material includes the transparencies themselves and the paraphernalia associated with cataloguing and filing.

On verge of obsolescence, there has been an upsurge of interest in 35mm slides, analogue cameras and photographic archives. The subject of the history of art teaching and the history of art  is attracting the attention of researchers and artists:  Archive Interventions  at the University of Manchester , Photo Archives and the Photographic Memory of Art History at New York University,  ACADI (Assoc. of Curators of Art & Design Images) Flickr photostream .
